Cosmetic Treatments Sometimes Hurt
Most patients understand that certain amount of discomfort is to be expected with cosmetic procedures. Although some pain is expected, every patient has a different pain tolerance and it is very difficult to explain to an individual patient how much discomfort they will experience. For those that are concerned with the degree of discomfort, there are several options that will lessen any anxiety.
Botox & Dysport Injections
The needles used for Botox injections are very small so the discomfort is usually minor. Patients receiving Botox injections typically do without ice packs and numbing cream. We offer ice packs for comfort as this helps to numb the area quickly and effectively. Some prefer not to use ice because the coldness is can be more uncomfortable than the procedure itself.
Dermal Filler Injections
Dermal fillers (examples: Juvederm, Restylane, Perlane) can be more uncomfortable than Botox because the products thicker. Most patients report that it is the placement of the product (hyaluronic acid) underneath the skin that causes the discomfort more so than the actual injection. The area of the face being treated will makes a difference in the level of discomfort with the lips and mouth area being the most sensitive. At our practice, we use multiple methods to keep you comfortable during the injections. We use topical numbing cream before the injections as well as ice during. Finally, each of the injection products is mixed with Lidocaine to provide an additional level of comfort.
