The term “laugh lines” is fairly common and one that is normally recognizeable to our patients. But “oral commissures” is not so frequently used but almost as common with our middle aged female injection patients.
The laugh lines are most commonly referred to as the area between the side of the nose and the corner of the mouth. As we age, the facial skin thins and pulls downward creating a deep wrinkle or crease in this area. The crease is accentuated by smiling or laughing – hence the name, laugh lines. Conversely, the oral commissures represent an extension of the laugh lines, but BELOW the mouth rather than above it. As the chin loses volume, these vertical lines develop riunning downward or slightly diagonal from the corner of the mouth to the sides of the chin. These lines can easily be filled using Restylane, Juveder or Perlane, creating more volume and make the lower mouth and chin look more natural, full and smooth.
