Treating Adult Acne

Having teenage is bad enough. When you never outgrow it though, and continue to have acne as an adult, it can be devastating. At least when you’re younger, you can look around and see many of your friends and peers going through the same thing you are; as an adult with acne, you look very different from your friends and peers. You feel embarrassed, self-conscious and ashamed of the way your skin looks.

Most people with adult acne have told us that it affects them personally and professionally. In fact, in a survey that we took of our adult acne patients, we found that a whopping 52% feel that their acne interferes with their romantic lives and interpersonal relationships! That’s a huge number that are affected in a very extreme, personal way. Are you in that group? If so, you don’t have to suffer with acne day after day with no end in sight. There is help and treatment to get rid of your acne and keep it under control once and for all.

What Causes Adult Acne?

The reasons behind adult acne are fairly similar to the ones of teenage acne. Basically, it’s caused by clogged pores and an overgrowth of bacteria. Our skin has many sebaceous glands that produce an oily substance known as sebum. Too much sebum causes the pore to become clogged or blocked, which traps bacteria (which is a normal part of our skin) inside the pore. In this super-oily, blocked pore, the bacteria starts to multiply and grow in number, and this causes inflammation of the pore, which is what a pimple is. The face, chest and back all have higher numbers of sebaceous glands, so that’s usually where the breakouts happen.

While some adults continuously struggle with acne, many (especially women) find that they have cyclical breakouts. This is usually due to the hormonal stimulation of the sebaceous glands during the menstrual cycle. Many women struggle with acne at various points during their lives due to hormonal changes, namely those related to estrogen. Pregnancy, perimenopause and menopause can all bring on new, adult acne. There are also a number of medications that adults may take that also trigger acne as a side effect.

Laser Treatment for Adult Acne

So what really works to help get adult acne under control? Sure, there are lots of products and gimmicks that are advertised to help, but with the busyness of life and restrictions of a household budget, who’s got the time or the money to try everything? Not to mention that a lot of these things are designed or geared more for an adolescent’s skin, not an adults.

Laser treatment is a newer treatment option that can work very well for adult acne. Because it targets the sebaceous gland, which is a starting point for acne, it works to slow down the production of the oil that triggers the flare-ups. It’s very much like laser hair removal in that the laser zeroes in on and heats up only the target structure, leaving the surrounding skin unharmed. One of our most common treatments for adult acne is photodynamic therapy.

Because Celibre Medical Corporation is a state-of-the-art medical laser facility we have several different lasers that can all be used in conjunction with one another to target multiple different causes of acne too.
