Rosacea is a condition that causes general redness, small veins or blood vessels, and general flushing of the face. It can be a frustrating condition to treat. Because it is chronic in nature (no cure), it tends to worsen as we age, and most patients see the first signs of rosacea in their 30’s or 40’s. It has traditionally been a condition associated with Northern European descent such as Irish, Scottish, or German. But more recently (In Los Angeles) we have been seeing more Hispanics and Asians with rosacea. This is likely because of its close association with sun exposure.
Although the exact cause of rosacea remains unknown there are several theories:
The bad news is that Rosacea has no cure. The good news is that we have excellent ways to effectively manage it. To decrease the redness and flushing associated with rosacea, we need to decrease the number of blood vessels at or near the surface of the skin. We can do this with two different technologies, BBL or Intense Pulsed Light and pulsed dye lasers. We love the Vbeam pulsed dye laser and lasers are used with more severe cases of rosacea where higher power is required to burst the small blood vessels in the cheeks. This causes temporary bruising but results in a decrease in the number of microscopic blood vessels at the surface of the skin.
