Before My Restylane Treatment

Like any cosmetic injectable procedure, treatments with dermal fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm may cause mild side effects. The most common is bruising at the injection site. While this can be frustrating, it is considered a normal and temporary side effect—not an adverse reaction.

How to Reduce the Risk of Bruising

To help minimize bruising, it’s important to avoid certain medications and supplements for approximately ten days prior to your treatment. However, never discontinue prescribed medications without first consulting your physician.

Products commonly associated with increased or prolonged bruising include:

  • Ibuprofen
  • Aspirin
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Ginkgo Biloba
  • St. John’s Wort
  • Fish oil supplements
  • Vitamin E (over 200 IU daily)

These substances can thin the blood or interfere with normal clotting, and their effects may remain in your system for up to ten days. Stopping them just a day or two before your appointment will not significantly reduce your risk.

Some patients choose to take Arnica tablets prior to their injections to help limit bruising and swelling. Applying topical Arnica gel after treatment may also be beneficial. In addition, consistent use of ice packs immediately following the procedure can help reduce swelling and minimize discoloration.

Discuss Your Treatment Plan

Certain injection techniques and facial areas are more prone to bruising than others. Be sure to have a detailed consultation with your provider beforehand. A skilled and experienced injector should review your medical history, discuss potential side effects, and explain strategies to reduce risks. Open communication ensures you feel confident and informed throughout the process.

If you are considering Restylane or Juvederm injections, scheduling a professional consultation is the first step toward achieving safe, natural-looking results.
