Aging Gracefully: The Reality of Getting Older
The same pattern of events occurs between my female patients and me during our medical appointments. People in my workplace engage in repeated conversations which they repeat to each other multiple times during their workday.
A woman who appears to be between forty and fifty years old sits facing me while she studies her reflection in the mirror before she exclaims, “What the hell is this?!” A patient recently expressed their thoughts through a quiet voice which sounded flat as they said, “It just sucks, it sucks so bad.” We shared a laugh, but also a sigh, as we began discussing her treatment goals and options.
We understand that life offers numerous reasons to be grateful because we have good health and working bodies and access to medical care yet we struggle to accept our bodies changing with time. People maintain their inner vitality and physical health even though their visible appearance in the mirror shows opposite results.
Common Signs of Aging Women Notice
The majority of women express identical worries about their neck area and brown spots and additional facial skin folds and the appearance of crepey skin which develops in various body parts.
Patients who explain every detail about their looks which they dislike make me feel uncomfortable. I observe their stunning facial elements which they tend to ignore after they complete their assignment. Every face has features worth appreciating.
People who age with dignity need to discover which parts of their appearance stay attractive even though their appearance has transformed.
How the Aging Process Sneaks Up on Us
I find it hard to believe that people seem to age so rapidly during their lifetime. I often compare it to a house of cards one small shift causes a cascade of changes.
People experience quick appearance changes when their cheeks seem to drop right away and their neck skin transforms in just twelve months and brown spots suddenly show up and melasma appears during a single vacation.
The list continues.
The situation looks familiar to you?
Hormones, Aging, and Why Women Experience Changes
My Medical Director who performs facial plastic surgery procedures explained to me that women experience these changes at an accelerated pace. I used my hands to pull my face back while I lifted my neck as I asked about the quick development of this condition in women.
Scientists discovered hormonal changes during their research process which helped them reach their results.
Yes, hormones once again.
Aesthetic medicine shows that hormones create acne and hair growth problems and cellulite and melasma and spider veins and stretch marks and now they also cause crepey skin and neck sagging. The medical condition becomes more complex because perimenopause brings hot flashes and weight gain to the situation.
Aging Gracefully at 52: A Personal Perspective
Like many women, I have my own internal checklist when I discover another reminder that aging is gaining ground.
I observed that my skin developed wrinkles on the surface of my knee area. My knees, for Pete’s sake! I quickly volunteered to test a new skincare product designed for crepey skin. My right eyelid and brow are descending, and my sun spots are routinely treated with lasers. I have filler in my cheeks to reposition what gravity is trying to take away.
See? I’m the patient too.
My knowledge falls short but I grasp how people experience their physical changes while their mind stays at their current age.
Modern Aesthetic Treatments and Realistic Expectations
The laser conference brought together top surgeons and aesthetic physicians to discuss their present findings in cosmetic medical practices. A panelist explained that women in their forties used to seek assistance for clothing appearance enhancement during previous years.
Women in the present day seek various methods to obtain their desired level of confidence through different approaches.
The situation forced me to pause for a moment of self-reflection.
I had a perfect body at twenty years old but I never understood its true value. At the age of 52 I accept my real appearance so I focus on building self-assurance instead of trying to achieve flawless looks.
Finding Balance While Aging Gracefully
People find their perfect place through the process of receiving acceptance and learning to accept reality.
My skin shows signs of aging through loose skin and cellulite but I want to discover treatments which protect my health while addressing my neck appearance issues. I treat sun spots but accept that crepey skin may only improve not disappear completely. My hands need filler treatment to hide my veins but I accept hot flashes and vision changes which happen during normal life.
My body feels right to me so I want my patients to discover their perfect skin balance.
People can experience freedom at any age including 52 by learning to accept themselves and developing their ability to handle life’s challenges with confidence and maintaining their sense of humor.
My best friend Heidi shared this wise statement with me:
Time shows its friendly nature through friendly interactions yet it creates its most dangerous appearance when it ages your face.
And honestly, that still makes me laugh.
