Rhinophyma = Enlarged Nose
Greek: “rhis” = nose
“phyma” = growth
What Rhinophyma Looks Like
Rhinophyma has a distinct appearance. Many patients worry they have it because their nose looks larger than they prefer. But rhinophyma is different because the condition progressively worsens as the nose continues to grow. The nose becomes fleshy, ruddy, bumpy, and overgrown, giving it a swollen look.
How Rosacea Leads to Rhinophyma
Rosacea is a skin disorder involving too much blood flow to the facial skin. It plays a major role in developing rhinophyma. At the point where rhinophyma forms, it usually means rosacea has become advanced and uncontrolled. You can think of it as too much blood supply being delivered to the nose, which triggers abnormal growth.
Treatment Options for Rhinophyma
Whether you are in the early or late stages, there are excellent treatments available. As with most conditions, early treatment leads to better results.
Mild to Moderate Rhinophyma
Our Sciton Profile (Nd: Erbium YAG) fractionated laser is an effective tool for reducing bulk in the nose.
Advanced Rhinophyma
Some advanced cases may require surgical correction.
Treating Rosacea-Related Redness
If you have rosacea and your concern is redness on the nose or cheeks, pulsed dye lasers can work very well. Using our Candela VBeam and Cynosure VStar combination, we can significantly reduce or eliminate redness and superficial vascularity caused by rosacea.
Thick, Oily Skin and Fleshy Bumps
A common related condition involves a nose that looks thick and oily. Patients may have fleshy bumps and an oily shine. These wart-like bumps, which are enlarged sebaceous glands, can resemble small cauliflower growths. They create uneven texture, large pores, and a less desirable appearance. These bumps can also appear in other oily facial areas such as the forehead and inner cheeks in the T-zone.
Treatment for Sebaceous Bumps
At Celibre Medical, we often use an old-school, non-laser technique called a Hyfrecator to shrink or remove these bumps. This electrical device is very useful for managing them. For larger or more numerous bumps, our Sciton Profile fractional resurfacing laser is an excellent alternative.
