Examining Voluma’s Place in Cosmetic Dermatology
Over the past several months, we’ve received a growing number of inquiries about Allergan Juvederm Voluma, following its highly publicized launch as Allergan’s newest dermal filler. While patient interest is understandable, our philosophy has always been to let new cosmetic products prove themselves in real-world use before fully embracing them in our practice.

Product launches in cosmetic dermatology are often driven by aggressive marketing rather than long-term clinical performance. Manufacturers invest heavily in PR campaigns, celebrity endorsements, and appearances on shows such as The Doctors and Dr. Oz to generate excitement in an already crowded aesthetic marketplace. Unfortunately, the reality of many new products often falls short of the hype — and Voluma is a strong example of this disconnect.
What the FDA Study on Juvederm Voluma Reveals
One of the most overlooked details about Juvederm Voluma comes from the FDA approval study itself. According to the data, the average patient received 6.5 cc of Voluma injected into the cheeks. For experienced injectors, this is an unusually high volume.
In most real-world clinical settings, patients typically receive 3 to 4 cc of dermal filler in the cheeks for natural-looking volume restoration. Using nearly double that amount significantly impacts both cost and perceived longevity.
The Real Cost of Voluma Cheek Filler
At current market rates, Allergan Juvederm Voluma costs approximately $750–$1,000 per cc. That means patients in the FDA study would have spent between $4,875 and $6,500 for cheek injections alone.
In our experience, very few patients are willing to invest that amount for a single treatment area, especially when comparable results can often be achieved with lower volumes and more cost-effective fillers.
Does Juvederm Voluma Really Last Two Years?
Voluma is marketed as a dermal filler that lasts up to two years, but longevity claims should always be examined critically. When Juvederm XC was first introduced, it was also promoted as lasting up to 18 months — a claim that real-world patient experience ultimately did not support.
Injecting 6.5 cc of any dermal filler will naturally produce longer-lasting results simply due to the sheer volume of product used. For this reason, we believe a 12-month duration for Voluma is realistic, but claims beyond that remain questionable.
Is Allergan Juvederm Voluma Worth the Premium Price?
While Voluma is certainly capable of producing noticeable volume and structure in the cheeks, the high cost per syringe and required volume raise important questions about overall value. Whether the premium price is justified will ultimately depend on long-term patient feedback, real-world longevity, and satisfaction over the next year or more.
For now, we remain cautiously optimistic but skeptical. As always, we believe informed patients should weigh the benefits, costs, and realistic expectations before choosing any injectable treatment.
